Hi, my name is Lisa Williamson. I am currently living abroad in Accra, Ghana completing an 8-month internship with an environmental Non-Governmental Organization. The internship is part of my degree requirements for the Honours International Development program at the University of Waterloo in Canada.
I have quickly come to realize that what I learn about myself and about life far outweighs the knowledge I am gaining at work. Getting used to a completely different culture, language, and way of life isn't always easy and there have been many challenges thus far. Learning about international development in books is very different from the realities of development in Ghana and indeed in the developing world.
I try to travel as much as possible on the weekends and learn from people we meet along the way. Ghana is a beautiful place with wonderful people always eager to help an "Obruni" or "white person", hence the name of my blog - Obruni Travels.
After completing my degree, I am hopeful that I will have the opportunity to do something great with my life. This might include a Master's Program or a job I am passionate about.
I am very proud to be a Canadian citizen and I am grateful for all of the wonderful opportunities I have here in Canada. Everyday I try my best to be a considerate visitor and embrace Ghanian culture and customs.
Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog!
